Between 1746 and 1753 a
cadastre of Scilla, Calabria Ulteriore II (part of the kingdom of Naples) was
ordered by king Charles of Bourbon. However, after years of not being
accomplished, the king sent his commissioners to complete the cadastre in 1753.
The families studied here were censed during 1753, in or after the month of
May. These documents were later sent to Naples, to the regia Camera della
Sommaria, and are currently preserved at the State Archive of Naples. Selected
photos of these documents were kindly emailed by the State Archive of Naples to
the moderator of this blog.
A wealth of information on the Caracciolo of 17th- and 18th-century Scilla was obtained from the baptism, marriage, and death registry books of the parish of Maria SS. Immacolata di Scilla, currently available on digital format and online at the website of the Archivio Storico Diocesano Reggio Calabria - Bova. The information from these digitalized photos and of many other parishes in Reggio Calabria as well has been transcribed in searchable text at the Genealogie van Rijswijk website, making it much easier and faster to retrieve the names and dates.
Also, some information on births, marriages and deaths after 1753 included here was
retrieved from the death, marriage and birth registries of Scilla from the
Napoleonic Civil Registry documents starting from 1810, which are preserved at
the State Archive of Reggio Calabria, and whose photographs are accessible
online through Familysearch.org. The rest of the information after 1753 was
retrieved from the death, marriage, and birth church records from the parish of
San Pietro (currently known as Supetar), in the island of Brac, Dalmatia,
Croatia, which are accessible online through Familysearch.org.
Some of the information on Michelangelo Caracciolo's family was obtained from

There is an Antonio Caracciolo [died < 6 April 1805] who married Annunziata Chirico (or
could it be that her name was Angela de D'Amico? see above). But there was an Annunziata Chirico born in Scilla on 28 July 1745, daughter of Antonino Chirico and Francesca Romano, but no marriage registry between Antonio Caracciolo and Annunziata Chirico in Scilla. Could it be that he had an extramarital relationhip with Annunziata? Or could it be that Antonio Caracciolo, son of Marina Pontillo and husband of Geronima Russo (see above), was the one who had the extramarital relationship with Annunziata? Whoever that Antonio Caracciolo was, the fact is that he and Annunziata Chirico (whether they were married or not) were parents of:
Giuseppe Antonio Caracciolo [born in Scilla c.1772, died in Supetar, Dalmatia on 4
May 1858], and
Rocco Caracciolo [born in Scilla c. 1773,
died in Supetar, Dalmatia on 15 August
1833]. It does say in the death certificate of both of the sons that they were legitimate children of Antonio Caracciolo and Annunziata Chirico. However, this was written in Croatia, so it is possible that they brothers hid their illegitimate origins there, perhaps to be able to marry?
